Claimed Is Not the Same as Optimized
Almost every business owner I work with has a Google Business Profile. Most of them have no idea whether it is actually working.
Claiming your profile is the first step. But a claimed profile that is half-filled, outdated, or inactive is not doing the work it could be doing. In some cases it is actively hurting your visibility by signaling to Google that this is not a well-maintained, active business.
The Most Common Reasons Profiles Underperform
Incomplete information. The profile was claimed, the basic name and address were filled in, and then nothing else was touched. Missing categories, missing service descriptions, missing holiday hours, no photos, no posts. Google uses every field you fill in as a signal.
Wrong or incomplete business category selection. Google allows you to select a primary category and multiple secondary categories. Most profiles have only the primary category filled in, and often it is too broad to compete in relevant searches.
No recent activity. A profile with the last photo added in 2021 and no posts or updates signals a business that may not be active. Regular posts, photos, and updates tell Google this is a live, maintained business.
No reviews or no recent reviews. Google uses the volume and recency of reviews as a trust and relevance signal. A profile with no reviews or with the last review from two years ago ranks lower than a comparable business with consistent recent reviews.
Inconsistent NAP. If your business name, address, or phone number appears differently across your website, your Google Business Profile, and other directories, Google has conflicting information and becomes less confident about surfacing you in results.
What a Well-Optimized Profile Actually Does
A properly optimized Google Business Profile shows up in the local map pack for relevant searches. It appears in AI-generated answers for local queries. It gives prospective clients enough information to make a decision before they ever click through to your website.
For local service businesses, the Google Business Profile often drives more qualified traffic than the website itself.
The Fix
Every field needs to be filled in correctly. Categories need to be selected strategically. Photos need to be added and kept current. A system for collecting and responding to reviews needs to be in place.
