You Do Not Need to Be Technical. You Need to Be Informed.
One of the most common things I hear from founders is some version of: I am not technical, so I just trust whoever I hire to handle it.
That is understandable. But it is also one of the most expensive positions a business owner can be in.
You do not need to know how to write code to own your digital presence. You need to understand enough to know what questions to ask, what you should own and control, and what it looks like when something is wrong.
What Owning Your Digital Presence Actually Means
Your domain needs to be registered in your name, in an account you can access. If you lose access to the person who registered it, you should not lose access to your web address.
Your website hosting account needs to be in your name or your business's name, with credentials you control. If you stop working with a developer or agency, you should be able to take your website somewhere else without their permission.
Your Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Google Business Profile all need to have you listed as an owner or admin. These are your assets.
Your email marketing list is yours. It should live in an account you own, not in an account that belongs to an agency that runs your campaigns.
The Things That Tend to Go Wrong for Non-Technical Founders
The most common problem I see is a business owner who has been paying a developer or agency for years and discovers, when the relationship ends, that they do not actually control their own digital assets.
The domain is in the agency's account. The website is on a hosting plan that belongs to the developer. The analytics access was never properly set up. The business owner is starting over from scratch with assets they thought they owned.
The Questions Non-Technical Founders Should Be Able to Answer
Where is my domain registered and do I have login access to that account?
Who hosts my website and is the hosting account in my name?
Do I have owner-level access to my Google Analytics and Google Search Console?
Is my Google Business Profile claimed and do I have admin access?
Where does my email list live and can I export it if I change platforms?
If you cannot answer these questions confidently, finding out the answers is the most important thing you can do for your digital presence right now.
